16mm is the Goldilocks of film formats. What is essential to realize is that it has seen a plethora of uses throughout the decades of its history, because it is the most versatile of the principal film formats. While 8mm was never suited to theatrical exhibition much the same way that 70mm was not practical for home viewing, 16mm is unique among its ‘siblings’ as a vital component of television, school, home and theatrical viewing for many years. This is so because 16mm is "just right"; capable of remarkable detail with strong fidelity to the effect of 35mm, but because of its unique size, still retains the warmth and ‘vintage’ appeal reminiscent of 8mm.
